Can you help make it easier to make that choice? Everyone helping a little bit makes big things happen - and we want to change the lives of six beautiful mustangs.
There is less than six hours left for bidding for the BLM internet auction. We are hoping to be able to win SIX 2-year-olds to bring into our programs and help - and hopefully participate in the Dakota Showdown next summer.
We've spent hours looking at videos and choosing our top six. It has not been easy, but we look at size, movement, relaxation, conformation ... and then there are the emotional answers.
Most of you know we are losing our beloved Hamilton this fall. Hamilton came from the failed ISPMB mustang sanctuary way back in 2016; a 4-month old colt and his mother starving to death with horrible physical issues due to inbreeding, overcrowing, and neglect. Hamilton, in particular, failed to develop the coffin bones in both hind feet.
The ISPMB situation was overwhelming, and took a huge toll on those of us who were there in person. Hamilton was initially our little bright spot, this cute, fuzzy little mustang baby who had been kept separate because his poor mother, who was penned with 150+ horses on 2 acres, had been repeatedly attacked by multiple stallions shortly after his birth. He was playful, sweet, and cute - surrounded by the horror of 900+ horses starving and struggling.
And then we trimmed him, ended up at the vet, and found out he had no bones in his feet. We were devastated ... until we got a second chance with him. We took him all the way to Cody, Wyoming, to see Dr. Ted Vlahos, who through special shoes and trims allowed us to attempt to give him a happy and pain free life.
Eight years later we've done that ... but now that he's full size his legs and hips are breaking down. His full-size body can't be supported by the feet, and we have to say goodbye. And I'm not going to lie, we are STRUGGLING with it. He is a fixture here; very loved, and is going to leave a huge hole.
Enter this sweet boy.
I've watched the video of this boy over and over again. Something about him reminds me of who our Hamilton could have been with good feet. He's not a clone; the markings aren't the same - but when I see him, I think of Hamilton.
I want more than anything to give him a chance - along with five of his friends.
We have enough for full sponsorship of 1.5 horses ... or enough to cover the purchase price of all six, transport, and some initial costs. We'd like to raise the funds towards their hay as we are still fundraising for that.
And we only have six hours until the auction is over to decide if we take the leap of faith, believe we can raise the rest of our hay funds this year, and bid on all six.
