Today 6-yr-old Smokey, who doesn't like to be caught, needs to see the farrier, so we get a good view of a round pen session with a horse who knows what he is supposed to be doing but is choosing to be difficult. Nina uses patience, body language, and a good use of energy to encourage Smokey to put his halter on and be caught for a trim.
Other than his aversion to being caught, Smokey has a good foundation of basic skills and has accepted a rider. He still has quite a bit of energy/anxiety, so needs to continue his training, and our goal is for him to participate in the Showcase Division of the Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge this summer to continue his riding education if he isn't adopted before May.
