Gracie was dropped off at the Sanctuary late November, 2012. She had been purchased at an auction in Missouri and brought up for a family who rides mules. Thought she would be good for their kids...she is terrified of everything! Once the halter is on she leads nice, and we just moved her to the lower pen. It appears she has some night blindness. We believe she is a hinny more than a mule. She's smaller than George, our resident standard donkey!
UPDATE August 2014: Gracie was previously successfully placed in a home as a companion for GSH's Millie, who would remain home alone when her adopter would go camping with her other horses. It was unclear if Millie would ever grow large enough to be able to go camping/be ridden. However, Millie is thriving and is now under saddle, and her adopter wished to take her along on trips ... leaving Gracie home alone. Because of this, and couple with Gracie's skittish nature and as a hinny, being a kicker, she was returned to GSH. We will be working with her to evaluate her behavior and determine if she will be adoptable at that point. On initial intake she is tough to catch and distrustful, but will come up for treats and shows real curiousity towards humans. We'll need to help her develop her confidence and trust. Once caught she leads well and doesn't mind touch. So far she hasn't kicked out at us, but we also haven't pushed her buttons much.
