May at the rescue brings all sorts of health related topics. It's not only when we switch from winter feeding to pasture feeding in South Dakota, but also when we do spring vaccinations. Horses need to be vaccinated every year to keep them healthy, and this can cost anywhere from $40-100 per horse depending on what we vaccinate for. It also means our horses have to get 2 or 3 shots every year! Check out this great infographic that explains how and why we vaccinate the horses.
Since we can't have you practice giving shots, we thought we'd just do an activity that we thought was cool this month. Click on the image below for a fun activity involving horses and scissors - two different age appropriate activities!
The May Hands-On activity will be Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. We will meet at the gas station at the Humboldt, SD exit off of I-90 between 12:45 and 1:00 and head to the farm together. Bug Club Ponies Comet and Cola will get their spring shots with your help if they behave, and we will discuss other health concerns that horses have, as well as have some grooming and play time with the horses if weather permits. Hands-On Memberships are $36 per year and allow you to attend up to 8 Hands-On Sessions a year. If you aren't a Hands-On Member, you can join us for a Hands-On Activity for $5 per child per session.
